“Comedy is tragedy plus time.” This statement, attributed variously to Steve Allen, Carol Burnett, Lenny Bruce, and Woody Allen articulates the transformative and political dimensions of comedy and humour. Humour acts as a corrective, as a balm, as a way of softening unpleasant truths and assuaging fears. This exhibition brings together Canadian and international emerging, mid-career and senior artists from across artistic disciplines and cultural backgrounds, whose work explores the relationship between the tragic, and the comic. This large-scale exhibition will occupy both Central and Sherwood Galleries, with additional work in Dunlop’s Mediatheque, on the façades of both Central and Sherwood Village Libraries, and at offsite performance venues.
